Designing for Modern Resort Living

At Smyth House Interior Design & Atelier we believe that when design is driven by purpose, beauty isn’t just something you see—it’s something you feel. Design is a powerful tool for solving real-life challenges, transforming complex problems into stunning, seamless solutions. This philosophy of using creative design solutions to solve real-life challenges is at the heart of our work and you can see come through in our latest project, Sonata Allegro. Bringing a modern resort living philosophy to life.

How Creativity Solves Real-Life Challenges

Resort-style living is not about extravagance—it’s about ease. It means designing a home where every space invites you to slow down, connect, and live with intention. Think sunlight that pours in effortlessly, spaces that transition naturally from indoors to out. Materials that feel grounding and tactile. And environments that encourage both gathering and solitude. It’s the luxury of having everything you need to restore yourself—beauty, comfort, warmth, and connection—integrated into the rhythms of everyday life. Resort-style living turns daily rituals into elevated experiences, making home feel like a permanent retreat, not a place you escape from.

Sonata Allegro is the quintessential embodiment of this approach. After decades of busy business ownership abroad, our clients came to us with a clear vision: a home that could be a true sanctuary. A place to gather. Hosting long dinners under the desert skies with their family. And live with the ease of a resort, but without the maintenance or pretense.

We transformed this vision into reality, crafting a home that defines Modern Resort Living as a way of life—not just a destination.

Creative Solutions for Seamless Sophistication

Connecting Expansive Rooms
To design modern resort living (especially in Arizona), we optimize seamless indoor-outdoor transitions. We execute this through expansive glass walls and a consistent architectural rhythm, ensuring a large home feels connected, not cavernous.

Achieving Cohesion & Warmth
We used a monolithic material palette. Plaster, concrete, white oak, and sustainable stone. This is applied in varied expressions throughout the home. This “one material, many expressions” approach keeps the environment visually calm, immersive, and timeless.

Effortless Entertaining
We integrated elevated hospitality-inspired features such as a professional chef’s kitchen, elegant service flow, and generous dining spaces—including a table for twenty—designed for family gatherings and long, lingering evenings.

Creating Timeless Presence
We crafted bold architectural elements with a restrained, refined hand. The result embodies quiet luxury that whispers, never shouts—style that doesn’t age, it endures.

Every detail—from the texture of the walls to the alignment of sightlines—was orchestrated with intention. The result is a home that functions beautifully, supports the rhythms of daily life, and stands as both a personal legacy and a thoughtful long-term investment.

This is what modern resort living design is all about.

Practicing What We Preach

Creativity doesn’t end at installation. At Smyth House, we are deliberate disruptors—always experimenting, refining, and expanding what design can be. We share our process because creativity is not a single choice; it’s a living practice. A collaboration. A conversation. A way of being in the world.

When your home is built with clarity and purpose, it becomes a protected investment, a connected refuge, and your ultimate retreat.
