It’s Plantin’ Season

Gardens in Arizona can be challenging, which is why I recently joined the FIGG community garden, an initiative my own mother started 12 years ago, and still manages today. You don’t realize what work goes into keeping small plots of land hydrated, happy and overflowing with nourishment in the desert heat. I must brag on my mom here for a moment – this small idea she had more than a decade ago has grown to donations levels of the TONS/year. They supply Tempe shelters with food monthly, bring community together and invest tremendous volunteer education for the youth. On top of that; they teach people like me who know nothing about gardening, how to actually garden. Here’s what we planted this season and some fun facts on what grows best together. Technically, October is the best planting month, but with our mild AZ temps, you can still get a crop even if you drop some seeds in now.

Fall is definitely the season for hearty, root vegetables and herbs… can you say Thanksgiving? We can’t wait to make our Turkey-day sides this year with our own home-grown Brussels sprouts, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, rhubarb, chives, rosemary and parsley. Take a look at one of our favorite fall recipes with these seasonal ingredients.

Some other great things to plant in the fall: kale, lettuce, radishes, spinach, and turnips.

Did you know that it actually matters what you plant next to each other? It does! Chives are a companion plant to carrots, but not to peas or beans. Parsley is a companion plant to onions and carrots. Rosemary, thrives next to carrots, cabbage, sage, and beans. Garden sage does well with cabbage, carrots, and rosemary, but should never be planted near cucumbers. Whether you’re planing a garden plot or individual planters… here’s our favorite simple herb kit.
